University of Indonesia Students Explore Overseas Remote Careers with Weshine

The increasing job opportunities for young people in Indonesia have inspired them to enthusiastically pursue these chances. This was evident in the high level of engagement from students of the University of Indonesia during a webinar organized by Weshine in collaboration with the Career Development Center Universitas Indonesia. Approximately 90 students participated in the event, held on Thursday, August 1, 2024, featuring Jay Ng, the CEO & Founder of Weshine, as the keynote speaker.

Jay’s presentation, titled “Boost Your Career with Overseas Job Opportunities,” focused on three key points: Trends and Opportunities in the Global Job Market, Preparing for Employment Overseas, and Working in Different Cultural Environments. These insights are crucial for young professionals pursuing remote career opportunities with international companies. He emphasized the significance of adaptability, a necessary trait for working remotely in foreign companies due to the significant cultural differences they may encounter.

Jay elaborated on various trends, such as the normalization of remote work post-pandemic, the role of Artificial Intelligence in reshaping the workforce, and the impact of global demographic shifts on employment. He also provided practical advice on preparing for international careers, including the importance of language skills, cultural understanding, and personal branding.

In addition, the presentation covered various aspects of working in different cultural environments, addressing key cultural dimensions such as Individualism vs. Collectivism, Power Distance, Masculinity vs. Femininity, Uncertainty Avoidance, Long-term vs. Short-term Orientation, and Indulgence vs. Restraint. These cultural insights are vital for those planning to work internationally.

The students actively engaged by asking questions related to these topics, particularly about the prospects and opportunities for remote careers abroad. Jay left the audience with an encouraging message: “As a young person, in the first 3–5 years, it is really good to have exposure to a wide range of things. This could mean being adaptable to take up different things and challenges. Whatever comes your way, just choose what you think is best for you, but be open, adaptable, and take some risks.”
