Exit Interview

What is Exit Interview?

An exit interview is a conversation with an employee who is leaving the company. For employers, it helps identify why employees resign, what can be improved, and whether there are recurring issues in management, workload, pay, culture, onboarding, or employee experience.

What does exit interview mean?

An exit interview is usually conducted near the end of employment, after an employee has resigned or before their final working day. It may be done by HR, a manager, or an external party, depending on the company’s process.

The purpose is to understand the employee’s experience and reason for leaving. Questions may cover management, workload, pay, benefits, career growth, communication, culture, tools, and whether the employee would recommend the company to others.

Exit interviews should be handled professionally. Employees may be more honest when they believe their feedback will be treated confidentially and not used against them.

Why exit interviews matter for employers

For SMEs, exit interviews can reveal problems that are not visible in daily operations. If several employees leave because of unclear expectations, poor onboarding, delayed payroll, weak manager communication, or lack of growth, the company can address those issues before more employees resign.

This is also relevant for companies managing remote teams in Southeast Asia. Employees in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, or Thailand may leave for reasons that headquarters does not immediately see, such as feeling excluded, lack of feedback, poor coordination across time zones, or unclear career direction.

Exit interviews are most useful when employers track patterns, not just individual comments.
